BOYD LIGHTING was founded in 1921 by William J. Boyd, who opened a showroom
featuring imported European light fixtures. Mr. Boyd, recognizing a fertile
market for specialty lighting products, opened his own manufacturing
facility in 1922. The designers and craftsmen that he assembled began
the tradition of lighting excellence that we carry today.
The architectural era of the 1920’s and 1930’s was incredibly rich and
ornate. Boyd’s custom lighting was used in many landmark San Francisco
buildings, including the San Francisco Opera House, the Mark Hopkins,
Fairmont and Huntington hotels, estates for the Hearst and Hass families,
and numerous clubs and theatres around town.
The 1940’s brought trials and challenges and by their completion, had
wrought a much different world, and a much changed and strengthened company.
During World War II, Boyd manufactured deck fixtures for ships, hospital
trays, radar scanners, equipment cases and metal stretchers.
