Color, light, texture, light, sound and aromatherapy combine to give this private full service spa a unique connection with its secluded peninsula in a salt marsh on Kiawah Island. The design supports trained specialists who administer signature treatments and services that incorporate |>>

indigenous ingredients from Kiawah Island's diverse surroundings - the gardens, the marshes and the sea. The name "Sasanqua" is a variety of local camellia with a broad leaf and fragrant white flower. service areas are invisible at all times. A 120 foot long meditational ipe <<|>>

boardwalk bridges salt myrtles and tidal marsh with views of teeming bird life. The design refers to the vernacular of the dependency buildings attendant to great southern homes. The wood throughout is cypress stained to blend with the color of Spanish moss and lichen <<|>>

The slats on the south elevation filter the sunlight into a ever-shifting pattern of light and shadow in the arcade leading to individual changing rooms. At night the building looks like a softly lit slatted lantern in the marsh. Foliage envelops the building where the sanctuary deck is pierced by live oaks which were left untouched or given a mild haircut. <<|>>

The interior finishes are an interplay of natural materials such as marsh-green natural cleft stone, hand textured plaster and cypress floors and wall and ceiling paneling in the treatment rooms. Water features and glowing lighting mark long axises, reflecting the feng shui concepts integrated into the design. <<|
